3. Chris Ashton, Saracens – The real marquee signing of the summer, Ashton’s switch from Franklin’s Gardens to Vicarage Road proved a real talking point when it was announced during last season. Certainly the England flyer seemed to lose some of the spark that made him such a dangerous prospect for both club and country and a public falling out with Northampton didn’t exactly help his cause. The move on paper seems a strange one (aside from the great wad of cash of course), Saracens aren’t exactly known for their expansive game plan and Ashton can be rather ineffective if not involved directly in the play (see England recently). It will be interesting to see whether he can recover the sparkling form that made him a guaranteed pick for his country.
