Fun Fact: Costa Rica were the only side to score more than one goal against Brazil at the 2002 World Cup. Unfortunately, the two goals from Paulo Wanchope and Rónald Gómez were little more than a consolation in their 5-2 defeat, and Costa Rica came third in their group behind Turkey by virtue of an inferior goal difference. Irrespective of this, Costa Rica appeared to be galvanised by what was only their second appearance at a World Cup Finals and propelled themselves up the FIFA world rankings over the following year, reaching 17th place in May 2003 – the highest position in the rankings in the country’s history.
